Degree Mills to Avoid

Earning an online degree is now considered a legitimate way to educate yourself. Many people earn their high school diplomas online, earn graduate certificates for vocational schools and even earn a college or university level degree. Today, it’s possible to even earn your PhD online.

Many people love this option because instead of having to quit work and go to school full-time or go to school part time and juggle work and take forever to graduate, you can earn your degree at a pace that suits your busy lifestyle. It’s very common for people to approach education this way today and many degree programs that are accredited are considered just as good as a traditionally earned degree.

But, there are degree mills out there. Degree mills are institutions that churn out degrees without the proper backing. Either the college or university that offers the degree offers it without the required amount of study for a degree of that calibre or offers you a degree without any study. There are also degree mills to avoid because some will simply scam you out of your money without providing a college or university level course at all.

How do you know if you’re dealing with a degree mill? It’s important to find out if the organization you’re dealing with is accredited or not. Do some research on that institution to determine if there are any lodged complaints against it. Ensure the listed accrediting agency really does exist as well.

Most universities will have a website with .edu extension, although many colleges have not yet acquired this highly regulated extension. Look for a way to contact the school by telephone as well. Don’t be afraid to do some research because many people can develop a website and misrepresent themselves.

Another clue is do they accept credit cards? Some legitimate organizations will accept cheques or wire transfers but today, having a credit card transaction is deemed by many to be the safest way to protect your money online because a credit card company will often provide you with safety measures to get you your money back if you have been treated fraudulently.

Your best approach to online education is to thoroughly investigate any school that you are interested in. Earning your degree is going to be hard work regardless of earning it online or offline. Make the most of this process and get the best results by ensuring your degree is accredited.
